About the Artwork

This work explores the analogue as a site of friction within a
digitized economy. The exhibition argues that digital systems
eliminate ambiguity; in response, 0 - - - 1 - - - 0 presents a
mechanical loop that refuses to resolve. By automating the
shoeshine box, a symbol of visceral, manual trade, the piece
creates an uncomfortable space between human presence and
robotic absence.
The concealed actuators and metallic wooden hands simulate
a gesture of care that is rendered cold by automation. This
uncanny motion exposes what the digital cannot compute: the
dignity and specific weight of physical labour. Rather than
offering the precision of a digital solution, the artwork lingers
on the absurdity of the "shine-dirty-shine" cycle. It functions as
a generative mode of resistance, forcing the viewer to witness
the tangible, repetitive effort that modern systems seek to
render invisible.
