About the Artwork

Flint has a history that I examined in the installation for the Diaspora Pavilion, commissioned by the ICF. This stone is formed in the burrows of some of England's earliest life forms . The stones were used to take common land from commoners and cut into weapons as England's first industry. Later, they were cut to spark early guns in any condition, anywhere in the world, facilitating colonial conquest. This gun-shaped flint is combined with 18th-century inkwells, as writing the empire was as damaging as the gun.
