About the Artwork

This striking sculpture evokes an alien, spider-like form, crafted from plaster and metal, and adorned with imitation variegated gold leaf. Its jagged, crystalline core bristles with energy, while eight curved, claw-like appendages encircle it menacingly, suggesting both defence and entrapment. The shimmering surface contrasts organic and mineral textures, giving it a primal yet otherworldly presence. The reflective, iridescent finish adds a surreal quality, as if the piece belongs to a mythic or extraterrestrial world. Tense and ambiguous, it hints at movement, threat, and growth—blurring the line between natural and imagined lifeforms. It is both relic and creature, object and organism.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Miranda Pissarides (b. 1988) is an independent artist living and working in London. She was trained at Byam Shaw, St Martin's, and the Slade School of Fine Art. She has exhibited extensively in London, New York, Brazil, Italy, Cyprus, and Japan, including solo shows in Rome, Japan, and London. In 2018, she was awarded the Saatchi Gallery Young Artist Award in Fine Art, and her sculptures were selected for exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. She has since had solo shows in New York and London.
