About the Artwork

‘Border I’ centres around ideas of translation and reproduction. The sculpture brings together replicas and reproductions of both Victorian and modern border tiles, speaking to the often layered and amalgamative history of London’s architecture as well as the social dynamics and communities within in.
The familiar embossed tiles reference east end pubs and local pie shops near Mortlock’s studio in Walthamstow. The neutral white surfaces forming a ghostly impression of familiar interiors, acting as memories, traces and echoes of community centred places.
