About the Artwork

Under the Surface is made on canvas obscured by a wooden offcut; a remnant from a previous work. The composition is determined by economy, with the holes positioned to maximise the use of the plywood rather than for aesthetic intent. The edges are sanded allowing its material history to remain visible while shifting its function.
The painting operates as a kind of excavation. Forms emerge, suggesting stone idols or relics found beneath layers of time and material. What is revealed feels archaeological, as though the work is holding traces of something buried beneath the surface.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gemma Holzer (b. 1996) is an artist studying for an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art. She holds a BA in Fine Art from City & Guilds of London Art School. She has had solo exhibitions in London and Taiwan. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions and art fairs in the UK, Taiwan, and China. She was shortlisted for The David Ballardie Memorial Awards in 2018. Her work has been published in Harpers Bazaar and VOGUE.
