Behind the Nation (2026). Stitched cotton flags, 120 × 170 cm each, shown as a single diptych. One flag holds together; its companion comes apart, seams exposed, the navy cross detaching into loose strips, edges left to fray. Collective identity can look clear and cohesive on the surface while underneath it is far more complex, fragmented and broken in places, just about held together in others.

Size: 120 x 70 cm each

Ready to Hang: Yes

Wall-hung textile diptych, no frame or plinth. Each flag measures 120 × 170 cm and hangs flat against the wall from a
reinforced black header at the top, fixed through metal eyelets at each top corner. The two flags hang side by side as a single
work, with a small gap between them, the intact flag on the left and the unravelling flag on the right. They hang directly to the
wall on screws or hooks through the eyelets; no batten or frame required.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Andy Mac Manus (b. 1979, Galway) is a London-based artist working across painting, textiles and public commissions. He holds an MA in Graphic Design from London College of Communication (2011). Recent exhibitions include Auto Amor at Acrylicize, London (2025), OXO at Outset Gallery, Galway, and Secret 7s at NOW Gallery, London. In 2024 he was commissioned to create the entrance installation for the 100th edition of The Other Art Fair and completed public commissions for Newham Council and Creative Land Trust. He undertook the Grow Studios residency (2024). His work is held in public and private collections internationally.
