Community Garden

The hinterland of an overgrown space, often filled with debris, or old shopping carts, small trees and pigeons. Shrubs and nooks. In most cases these netherworlds are the places that have been left underused and are allowed to develop into small Wild forests, a brown field wilderness. They aren’t as common in the south as they used to be. Associated bomb sites and undeveloped land, spaces of unresolved ownership disputes, uncared for. There are Associations with danger but also of a certain commonality, that because nobody owns it, its a sort of wildly free space that allows strange adaptations. Dens, weird swings, car burnings and fires, sprawling graffiti. Brambles. Cigarette lighters. nature coming back into control in all its forms

These spaces they also provide a place for children to play to take risks.  Part of this manifesto of the The adventure playground That if children are allowed to take more risks they will grow to be more confident. And more understanding that they can physically influence the environment around them and how it all works. They can pick blackberries, be stung by stinging nettles, find doc leaves. Run away from bees and graze their knees in a race. Eventually the sun has been setting on all these places as we see development, but I wanted to make a work that remembers them experientially.
