About the Artwork
The corbel-inspired sculptures bring together the functional and the (shunned!) decorative with inherent potential to sit - not just on a wall- but also on the intersection of art and design.
In a time when art storage is unaffordable, I put my sculptures to work, becoming a type of storage platform themselves. Has your artwork ever pulled its weight around your home? I am interested in architectural ornament: its history, transformative powers, and capacity to deliver pleasure, transfer knowledge and forge a closer relationship between subject and space, while also being closely interlinked with craftsmanship.
The latter is why neither cast nor CAD would do, and I had to hand-build these corbels to produce a deeper understanding of many traditional formal choices.
Rejecting Modernism’s cancellation of ornament, I dove into a playful material exploration through the various interactions of glaze chemistry, clay and gravity. The result is a camp, wonky ceramic take on historic architectural adornment. If the performativity of decor can liquefy class by dressing up my/any humble abode to a ‘royal standard’, then these corbels here resist and subvert the atmosphere of an office building.
