About the Artwork

Mormolyce presents a violin beetle adorned with lavender and pansies, linking the insect’s adaptive form to the long history of natural spaces as queer refuges. Lavender, once coded language for queerness, recalls its association with the “Lavender Menace” and its use in ancient love spells. The beetle, flattened and designed for camouflage, references how queer identity often navigates visibility and concealment. The piece has a stackable structure, with a detachable head, drawing from fragmented ancient sculptures, Etruscan funerary figures and the instability of ecological systems under threat.
