About the Artwork
Operation Sempstress imagines the folds and pockets of a 'sempstress' or ‘seamstress’. Taking inspiration from the game “Operation” (1997) and Louis Auzoux’s ‘Ovology Set’ (1850), through various slots and grooves, Scarlett considers the bodily connotations of the pocket and the historical etymologies of it’s French translation - ‘poche’, previously used to reference bumps, blisters, protuberances and their bursting. Scarlett is intrigued by the entangled nature of garments themselves, which are entwined with bodies and lives; the versatile nature of pockets become extensions of the body - keeping objects of love, pleasure, practicality or even survival, hidden and close at hand.
