About the Artwork

This movement study is developed out of the vanitas still life tradition, in particular, that of the Spanish bodegón. It features a selection of commonplace pantry items: crockery and candles. These domestic objects are staged before a gridded backdrop. Their form is examined thoroughly, held up to scrutiny, weighed and measured.

These sequential drawings trace the play and measured motion of light across time. Pottery provides a canvas for that movement. The intimate light of the burning candle reveals the depth of form and space around it. It likewise discloses the subtle character of these crafted objects and the hands which made them.

This particular piece features the wares of local potter, Grace McCarthy. Her pots can be found in various galleries and boutiques around London.
