UNFOLD: Soft Mechanics explores perception, disruption, and spatial rhythm through a layered composition of photographic print, mesh, thread, and tactile materials. A spiral form anchors the work, while the grid-breaking wire mesh and punctuated foam gestures suggest both containment and release. Part of the broader UNFOLD series, the piece reflects my ongoing interest in how visual and material interventions shift perception—where light, structure, and emotion intersect in subtle yet transformative ways.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Beate Sonnenberg (b. 1966, Cologne) is a German mixed media artist based in London. She studied at Bournemouth College of Art and has a lens-based practice exploring perception, light, and materiality. Her work has been exhibited at Photo London, Ferens Art Gallery (Hull), and Unit 1 Gallery Workshop. She held a solo exhibition, Simple Complexity, in London in 2022. Her video works were longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize (2024), and her work has been included in Aesthetica Magazine.
