About the Artwork
Penance serves as an act of repentance. It mourns humanity's arrival at a technological event horizon. We are at a point where our digital lives increasingly separate us not only from ourselves, but from our intrinsic connection to the natural world. Creating the work was a slow, physically demanding act of fabric tearing, hand-weaving, and building a custom-made loom. This ritualistic labour serves as a direct confrontation to the mind-numbing scrolling on our phone screens and the ubiquity of digital art.
Penance frames this process as an intentional turning away from the hyper digital. In a world that values speed and quantification, this piece speaks to the memory held in worn materials, the politics of labour, and the profound weight of time. It functions as a solemn, physical archive of human effort and entropy, demanding a slow, bodily engagement that directly counters the detached, fleeting interactions of our online lives.
