About the Artwork

This work is part of an ongoing series shaped by my engagement with the desert as both physical site and poetic, existential space. Through painting, I explore the relationship between the human body and landscape, using the canvas as a site of material and emotional inquiry. Built through layers of oil paint and partially veiled with pigments and sand, the surface echoes erosion and sedimentation. Here, memory settles like dust, and silence becomes a space in which the earth and the self can be heard.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mingzhang Sun (b. 1990, China) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across painting, textile, and sculpture. He completed an MA in Contemporary Art Practice at the RCA (2025), following a BA in Costume for Performance at LCF(2017) and a BA in Fashion Design at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing (2013). Sun is the recipient of several awards including the Royal College of Art Deputy Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship (2024), First-time Entrant Award at World of Wearable Art (2018), UAL Excellence in Design & Realisation for Performance Award (2017), and the CAFA President’s Choice Award (2013).
