About the Artwork

In the city, leaves scatter like confetti, glass beads glitter in road markings, and graphite drains catch the glow of passing lights.
If you look closely, among the rubble, grit, and dirt, the city gleams and celebrates joyfully. This work was formed after a long meandering walk. The repetitive motif of the dot references both the mundanity of city life, the commute, the routine, and forces a slowing down in the studio. Made up of over 600 hand-cut circles, Each dot is unique, despite its attempt to replicate the one before it.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shayna Fonseka (b.1994) completed their MFA at the Ruskin School of Art and BFA at Slade School of Art, after obtaining a Foundation Diploma from Central Saint Martins. They were awarded the Erna Plachte Award in 2024 and shortlisted for the Oxford Review of Books Art Award.

Recent exhibitions include ‘ Weather Reports', COCA, Colombo, Sri Lanka (2026) and 'Positions in Contemporary Art: Europe Across Borders', Curated by kollektiv collective, London (2025). Shayna was also exhibited as part of 'Under Archives', SET, London (2025); 'Questions on Drawing', Exvoto Gallery, London (2025); 'Carry on Baggage', Galeria Augustine, Lisbon (2023); and 'Can't Take My Eyes off You', Indigo + Madder, London (2022).

Shayna was featured in Rise Art's 'Curator at Large: Exhibitions to see'.
