Cleaved

Alabaster, found wood
73 x 52 x 70 cm

Regular price £1,350.00
About the Artwork

Cleaved comprises two forms carved from a single piece of alabaster. Rough fracture remains visible at the base of the stone before gradually giving way to smooth, haptic surfaces that catch and disperse light. A small dark pebble, barely visible, is held between them, a subtle marker of loss carried within the work. The sculpture rests on found wood chosen for its own history of damage and repair.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mary Norowzian (b.1958) is an emerging artist whose abstract sculptures explore memory, trauma, and healing. Stone, shaped through compression and time is a metaphor for lived experience including damage and repair. Through direct carving, she engages in a meditative dialogue with material, technique, and emotion, creating haptic forms. Following a career in counselling and mental health, she established her studio practice in 2019, gaining a First Class BA (Hons) at West Dean College of Arts (2025). Exhibition highlights include the GraduateArt Show Global at Vanner Gallery (2025), London Craft Week (2025), and South Downs Open (2024).
