About the Artwork

Displaced Lock, from The Misplacement Bureau, is a wall-mounted sculptural work made from MDF and a displaced locking mechanism. Developed during my SÍM residency in Reykjavík, the work suggests a fragment of architecture or furniture removed from its original function. It points to access, obstruction, temporary occupation and the unstable systems through which space is claimed, secured or made usable. The object carries the memory of a functional structure, but appears as a remnant: no longer fully useful, yet still charged with the pressure of use.

The work is wall-mounted. I will provide two metal holders and the required screws for installation. The holders should be fixed securely to the wall, with the work resting on them and installed at a slight forward-leaning angle of approximately 10 degrees, as intended. No plinth is required. I will provide simple installation instructions with the work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Michalis Karaiskos (b. 1979, Cyprus) is a visual artist of Cypriot and Greek-Egyptian heritage based in London. He holds an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London, and an Integrated Master’s Degree from the Athens School of Fine Arts. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts (London), and the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre (Latvia). He won the James H. Pinto Painting Award (2022) and the K-Droz Art Prize (2020). He will attend the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2026.
