About the Artwork

This piece emerged from writing my own mythology. I am interested in storytelling as a form of reclamation, reclaiming folklore as rooted in working-class experience and restoring women’s and international voices often flattened or sanitised over time.
My work returns folklore to something communal, strange, contradictory, and alive.
This piece reflects experiences of survival and transformation. Constructed as a double-sided work, it contains a painting on both front and reverse, revealing different narratives depending on how it is encountered. It asks what is concealed and what is performed, and what remains hidden or becomes visible.

Year: 2026

Size: 244 x 244 x 56 cm

The work consists of two separate framed plywood panels (each 122 × 244 cm), displayed together to create an overall footprint of approximately 244 × 244 cm. The work is sculptural and may be installed either wall-mounted or free-standing.
For free-standing installation, four triangular plywood supports are attached directly to the timber frame using screws: larger supports sit on the outer edges and smaller supports on the inner edges. The painted figures on the supports face outward.
Intentionally DIY in construction, the work retains flexibility and may be installed together or as separate elements. Wall fixings
supplied by venue.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ruby Waage Townsend (b.1996, Leicester, UK) is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, performance, installation, and myth. Their practice treats painting as a performative act, creating immersive worlds where folklore, dark humour, enchanted realism, and unstable identities collide through theatrical self-portraiture and world-building.
Ruby is currently completing an MFA in Painting at The Slade School of Fine Art and graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Art
from De Montfort University in 2023. Recent highlights include a commissioned portrait of Baroness Doreen Lawrence, residencies with AA2A and UK New Artists, and receiving the Irving Wernick Scholarship and Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant.
