About the Artwork

Created in a burst of energy, this work was painted in one sitting, a single breath of release. The physicality left no space to reflect. It was an urgent gestural act carried through to the point of exhaustion, where all that remained was light. Circling. Physically releasing.
Painted on primed canvas with oil and oil stick, the surface holds that intensity. Relief comes through the act of giving, redeeming oneself through gesture. There is a tension between what is held and released, gathering and dissolving until the surface softens and light comes in.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shooq AlShawi (b. 1988, Bahrain) is a Bahraini, London-based painter working from her studio in London. She creates large-scale abstract gestural works in oil and oil stick on canvas. She holds a BA (Hons) from the University of the Arts London, London College of Fashion (2010), and a Foundation in Art and Design from Newcastle College (2006).
In 2025, she was shortlisted for ArtEvol 2025: Voices from the Undefined at the Saatchi Gallery. She has exhibited at the Bahrain National Museum and Apsara, and is part of Beyond Studios, Ouroboros Art School and the Turps Banana Spring 2026 Residency.
