About the Artwork

This work belongs to Extraction Abstractions, a series that appears abstract but is rooted in early 20th-century British economic maps showing locations for extracting resources such as iron, tobacco, copper, and opals – maps that viewed the planet as a storehouse for exploitation. The paintings develop through layered impasto and oil glazes, echoing geological strata referenced in the maps. By transforming capitalist diagrams that reduce nature to commodity into tactile, poetic, and contemplative works, I reinterpret these extraction maps, mining them not for resources but for artistic meaning.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Marcia Teusink (b. 1971, USA) has lived in London since 2008. She exhibits widely in the UK, Europe and the USA, including recent exhibitions at 195 Mare Street (London), Territory Expo (Portugal), Rome Botanical Gardens (IT), and a commissioned installation for the Od Arts Festival (Somerset). Teusink has held residencies at Kala Art Institute, MASSMoCA, PADA Studios/SLUICE, Unit 1 Gallery-Workshop, and Brisons Veor. She recently co-curated a Ground Collective exhibition at Hypha Studios. She studied English at UC Berkeley, Visual Art at CUNY Queens College, and Museums in Education at UCL, and has received DYCP and AA2A awards in 2025.
