About the Artwork

Ghostly Syncopation of Two Halves pairs a kiln-fired glass heart with a broken antique plate inherited from my grandmother.
The heart’s colour echoes that of the plate’s bucolic landscape, causing them to visually merge. As the heart virtually dissolves into the landscape, this work explores the fragmentation of identity within the burdens and responsibilities of everyday life – the fractured plate speaks of inner division and frustration—themes reflected in the title’s
reference to syncopation. By uniting inherited and handmade elements, the work transforms a damaged object into a meditation on continuity, repair, and renewal.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Iluá Hauck da Silva (1976) is a Brazilian British artist based in London. Having received a BA from Goldsmiths University of London in 2002 and an MA from King's College London in 2020, they have held solo exhibitions with the National Trust, the Royal Parks, and the British Optical Association Museum. Group shows include The Royal Landscape, Keck School of Medicine (University of Southern California, LA), Royal Western Academy of Arts (RWA), and several others across Brazil, the USA, and Europe.


Hauck da Silva has been longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize three times and, in 2023, their work featured on the exhibition catalogue's front cover. A recipient of the Arts Council Emergency Fund for Artists during the Covid-19 pandemic for shows at public spaces, their work has been featured in publications such as Elephant, The Times, and Artlyst. They also work as a therapeutical arts facilitator at an NHS centre, delivering art sessions to adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities and complex mental health issues.
