About the Artwork

I aim to create a portrait of a feeling in my paintings and 'Hustler' has a kitsch, comedic aura. An image taken from pop culture advertising imagery where the woman has a seductive pose as id she is hustling for something she is seeking. The basketball net is a metaphor for the nature of hustling and moving towards reaching a goal. The dark night sky adds a mood that there is something more than meets the eye to her desires.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Jennifer Louise Martin (b. 1980, London) is an artist based in London, studying for an MFA in Painting at Slade School of Art. She has a postgraduate diploma from Byam Shaw Central St. Martins. She has had solo exhibitions in London, New York, Los Angeles, and Berlin, and her work has been in group shows at the Zabludowicz Collection and Mall Galleries. Her short film 'Hear My Cry' won Best Short Film at the New York Movie Awards.
