About the Artwork

I Can Try to Protect You is one of an ongoing series of works exploring themes of parenting, grief, and chance. The influence of the spaciousness of working in a larger studio than usual whilst on residency at Xenia Creative Retreat, whilst being seriously troubled by personal and political events, fuelled the creation of this painting. I fell in love with the work of Kathe Kollwitz recently, and was thinking of her sculpture Tower of Mothers, amongst others, whilst painting this.
