About the Artwork

Across various forms of media, Amy Gillies’ work utilises the possibilities of quotation and collage to connect lines of inquiry between the past and present. Her text-based work is produced by collaging found source material such as art magazines and literary fiction.
In the case of this work, a single line from her written work has been isolated and hand-embroidered onto cotton. Having gone through multiple layers of mediation, the work is somewhat recognisable while remaining ambiguous about its specific origin.
When displayed out of context, the viewer encounters a phrase they cannot fully reconcile.
