About the Artwork

A hand-built stoneware amphora merging ancient aesthetics with modern Hackney characters. Inspired by Roman vessel forms, it reimagines everyday rituals as sacred rites: crisps become offerings, trainers replace sandals, and a whippet stands in for a mythic beast. The central figure, in a toga and clutching a bag of Torres, captures the clash of classical style and contemporary lounging. Latin phrases like “Sine Olivis Nihil” (Nothing Without Olives) add tongue-in-cheek reverence for modern luxuries. A playful love letter to East London’s visual excess and a commentary on cultural currency, identity and indulgence.
