About the Artwork

Inspired by the reintroduction of the Scarlet Macaw to Brazil's Atlantic Forest nearly two centuries after its disappearance from the biome, this work celebrates resilience and renewal.
A kiln-fired glass heart is positioned within a vintage saucer inherited from my grandmother and made in São Paulo State, where I grew up. The heart's vivid colours echo the plumage of the Scarlet Macaw, transforming the bird into a symbol of life, recovery and hope. Bringing together inherited and handmade elements, the work reflects on the relationship between memory, place and the natural world, celebrating nature's capacity for regeneration.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Iluá Hauck da Silva (1976) is a Brazilian British artist based in London. Having received a BA from Goldsmiths University of London in 2002 and an MA from King's College London in 2020, they have held solo exhibitions with the National Trust, the Royal Parks, and the British Optical Association Museum. Group shows include The Royal Landscape, Keck School of Medicine (University of Southern California, LA), Royal Western Academy of Arts (RWA), and several others across Brazil, the USA, and Europe.


Hauck da Silva has been longlisted for the Aesthetica Art Prize three times and, in 2023, their work featured on the exhibition catalogue's front cover. A recipient of the Arts Council Emergency Fund for Artists during the Covid-19 pandemic for shows at public spaces, their work has been featured in publications such as Elephant, The Times, and Artlyst. They also work as a therapeutical arts facilitator at an NHS centre, delivering art sessions to adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities and complex mental health issues.
