About the Artwork

The work in her strand SOFT explores the idea of comfort - its capacity to soothe, but also to seduce or suffocate. The Soft Cell series examines the allure of relinquishing agency in return for a soothing sense of weightlessness, an absence of friction, a kind of anaesthetic against postmodernity. The Soft Core series places ‘self-soothing’ in the context of imagery and sensation:  what's at stake when we consume to be consumed, or subsume the erotic into a pornotopia whose images refer only to themselves. Suspended, this work suspends judgement, inhabiting rather than resolving the ambiguity between play and dependence, delight and unease, artifice and the increasingly ambient forms of artificiality through which contemporary life is experienced.

Kate Williams

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Kate Williams work across sculpture, textiles and installation, using quilting to construct both images and environments through two strands, Pool and Soft. Although formally distinct, both explore the ways in which illusion, comfort and material seduction shape our willingness to enter fictional spaces. Kate is interested in the strange pleasure inherent in the recognition that a world is constructed, while continuing to fully inhabit it.

Kate's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Barbati Gallery, Venice (2026), Safehouse Peckham (2025), SLQS Gallery (2024), and more. Featured in publications such as The Guardian, FAD Magazine, Elle Decoration, and more.
