About the Artwork
Using scraps of fabric that would otherwise be thrown away, ‘Surface Tracing’ utilises reconnection in search of new landscapes.
Refusing defeat, the seemingly-nothing is made into something, at once emphatically material and yet of itself, immaterial. Tenuous threads tread, trace over the surfaces, travelling through the fabric, binding and weaving as they go. A web of relations between the disparate and discarded is made, these connections turning separate and useless pieces into something whole and purposeful again. The effect is akin to a map, following lines across changing landscapes, always different but of necessity, connected.
