About the Artwork
This work extends the tradition of Dutch vanitas and memento-mori painting but replaces religious canon with particle physics.
It’s appearance of is informed by the liveried, rusting, and peeling surfaces of international freighters that pass my studio. I see their industrial skins as an analogy for how our own identities are transformed by time, migration, and experience, and how they are recorded as memories, wrinkles, and scars. The reused materials echo how matter and energy, including that which composes ‘us’, is constantly recycled by ecological and cosmological systems. Nothing is lost. It is only the format that changes.
