About the Artwork

Lockdown drew me into a psychogeographical relationship with my surroundings through walking — a way to disengage from the anxiety-driven pace of city life. The work reframes the everyday commute. Made from mild steel, and a digital print on lining paper.
The title is a mantra I regularly recite, walking is my attempt to silence it. The halftone photograph on lining paper looks down at the ground. Steel strips divide the image, echoing the rhythmic monotony of the daily suburban commute, inviting its quiet beauty to reveal itself.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shayna Fonseka (b.1994) completed their MFA at the Ruskin School of Art and BFA at Slade School of Art, after obtaining a Foundation Diploma from Central Saint Martins. They were awarded the Erna Plachte Award in 2024 and shortlisted for the Oxford Review of Books Art Award.

Recent exhibitions include ‘ Weather Reports', COCA, Colombo, Sri Lanka (2026) and 'Positions in Contemporary Art: Europe Across Borders', Curated by kollektiv collective, London (2025). Shayna was also exhibited as part of 'Under Archives', SET, London (2025); 'Questions on Drawing', Exvoto Gallery, London (2025); 'Carry on Baggage', Galeria Augustine, Lisbon (2023); and 'Can't Take My Eyes off You', Indigo + Madder, London (2022).

Shayna was featured in Rise Art's 'Curator at Large: Exhibitions to see'.
