About the Artwork
The materials found in the suburbs have always brought me a sense of comfort and nostalgia. While pebble dash, driveway bricks and PVC may read as ugly and harsh, seeing familiar materials in unexpected places immediately invites a reminder of home. We lay down durable, ‘permanent’ materials, subsequently removing nature in the process. But it is never truly permanent, and it can never beat natures resilience; roots that break pavements, weeds that grout paving stones.
This friction between man made hardscape and natural, organic matter is beautiful and deeply poetic. It brings hope. And perhaps gives us something to celebrate.
