About the Artwork

This is the first version of a large ink drawing based on an old family photo, on black and white ink used in a painterly fashion.
the upper part of the drawing was cut out to follow the drawing's contour and, once fixed to a piece of plywood, this was also cut out to follow the contour, but leaving some of the plywood exposed, as to emphasise the materiality of the work.

The custome-made shelf is made with a piece of frame baston, narrow, so it needs to be fixed to the wall in 4 different places: at eith end (with the metal fixings included) and in the middle with 2 small metal brackets. The drawing fixed on plywood seats on top of this shelf

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Renata Fernandez (b. 1971, Venezuela) is a London-based artist completing an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art (2026-27). She has also completed education in Fine Art, Social Sciences, and Drama-Set Design in Venezuela. 

Renata has been exhibited internationally, including: 'SHADOWBANNED IN A TIME OF MONSTERS' (2025); 'TRADERS COURT' (2024); 'TROPICO CAMUFLADO' at Museum Alejandro Otero in 2013-2014. She has also completed public art commissions ECDCo in 2024, AIR at Latin American House in 2022 and Carnwath Road in 2016.

Renata collaborates with galleries/curators in Venezuela, USA, UK,Europe and Singapore, with her work being held in collections by Groucho Club (Bretton House) and ECDCo, as well as private collections in the UK, USA, Canada, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Taiwan and Venezuela. Her work was featured in the book 'AMALGAMA: WOMEN, IDENTITY & DIASPORA'.
