About the Artwork

This painting like the others in the series is a meditative offering finding beauty in a possibly overlooked scene—a holiday location, a beach, with a family present, interpreted as a fragmented memory that evokes intimacy and dislocation. The scene is static yet emotionally charged narrative, where people are presented as textured silhouettes in bright vermillion. Presented as isolated elements they become symbolic anchors. This painting is full of tension despite the obvious, mundane, subject matter, requiring the viewer to complete the scene somehow.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Renata Fernandez (b. 1971, Venezuela) is a London-based artist completing an MA in Sculpture at the Royal College of Art (2026-27). She has also completed education in Fine Art, Social Sciences, and Drama-Set Design in Venezuela. 

Renata has been exhibited internationally, including: 'SHADOWBANNED IN A TIME OF MONSTERS' (2025); 'TRADERS COURT' (2024); 'TROPICO CAMUFLADO' at Museum Alejandro Otero in 2013-2014. She has also completed public art commissions ECDCo in 2024, AIR at Latin American House in 2022 and Carnwath Road in 2016.

Renata collaborates with galleries/curators in Venezuela, USA, UK,Europe and Singapore, with her work being held in collections by Groucho Club (Bretton House) and ECDCo, as well as private collections in the UK, USA, Canada, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Taiwan and Venezuela. Her work was featured in the book 'AMALGAMA: WOMEN, IDENTITY & DIASPORA'.
