About the Artwork

‘Not a Pair of Scales’ I have cast a discarded domestic object so it becomes a sculptural form. It retains its familiarity yet take on an alternative role in its relation to the other materials and spatial dynamics of the sculpture. I am interested in how the form has been repurposed rather than the nostalgia the object generates, although I am not able to control how others see it.

Ready to Hang: n/a (the work is a sculpture/based on the floor)

The sculpture is not suitable for outdoors as the materials will degrade. The sculpture has an integral steel plinth. The work will arrive in 2 parts: 1. the steel, jesmonite and wood sculpture mounted onto a square wood block 2. a steel box section plinth with a steel floor plate. The wooden square block on the bottom of the sculpture fits inside the top of the steel plinth. Front and back of the sculpture is marked on each part to orientate the sculpture. There is are holes drilled into the steel through which screws (provided) can be fixed into the wood block inside the box section to make the sculpture secure. Once on the plinth the sculpture can be orientated in which ever way works best.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gillian Brent (b. 1959, Bedfordshire) is a sculptor based in Sheffield. She studied at Wimbledon School of Art and St Martin’s School of Art. Brent is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and a founding member of Talking Sculpture Making. She has exhibited extensively in galleries throughout Britain, including Tate Gallery, London, and Hypha Studios, Stratford.
