About the Artwork

The Totem series is rooted in the notion of a contemporary totem. In an age ruled by rationality and technology, how do we respond to what remains mysterious, uncontrollable, or sacred? Each work abstracts plant forms into timeless spirits of nature, radiating their vital energy outward. The silks were first imbued with carefully chosen plants through natural dyeing, before the totemic forms emerged upon them.

Like all living matter, these plant-based colours continue their journey. They shift gently as they age, adapting to the presence of light, air, and the passage of time. Rather than remaining fixed, they remind us of impermanence, of the fragile yet powerful cycles of transformation that underpin existence itself.

The work is created on silk stretched over canvas and set within a fixed frame. It cannot be unframed. The piece can be hung directly on nails set into the wall. It requires only a standard hanging method with no additional installation needs.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Ewelina Skowrońska (b.1980) is a visual artist whose practice centers on the relationship between humans, plants, and deep time. Working with hand-harvested natural dyes and shibori textile techniques developed through ten years of practice in Japan. Her work occupies the intersection of textile art, painting, and ecological thinking, questioning the boundaries between art and craft, tradition and contemporaneity, the intimate and the universal.


She holds an MA in Visual Arts from the Camberwell College of Art and an MA in Political Science from the University of Wrocław, Poland. Her work was exhibited in Japan, Poland, US, Denmark and London.
