About the Artwork

Blackware Hound is a hand-built stoneware vessel that reimagines Roman dog-head goblets through the lens of life in modern Hackney. The howling hound form, based on the artist’s own whippet, sits somewhere between sculpture and functional object. Floral slip decoration wraps the base, nodding to traditional ceramic motifs while keeping things playful. The piece explores Hackney’s cultural influence today, its creative energy and contradictions, and draws a line back to ancient Rome - another place where style, identity and symbolism shaped everyday life. It’s about continuity, community, and the creatures we keep close.
