About the Artwork

Ode to a cello is a nod to Claes Oldenburg’s Soft Viola (2002) made in collaboration with his wife and creative partner Coosje van Bruggen.
The instrument as a body
The body as an instrument
The first strings were gut. The first rope was plant fibre and sinew. Long before the instrument there was the animal, revered, depicted on cave walls with care, approached with ceremony. Somewhere that reverence became use. The body was strung and the cosmic resonance changed.
